School Budgets Pass Putnam-Wide

All six school districts in Putnam County celebrated passage of their respective budgets when voters went to the polls May 21.

Carmel Central School District’s $141.7 million budget with no property tax levy increase was approved by voters, 1,900 to 1,341. The safety and security bond proposition was also approved, 1,768 to 1,458.

Elected to the Carmel School Board for the next three years were incumbents John Curzio II with 2,327 votes, and Melissa Orser with 2,134 votes. Roshan Bhojwani received 991 votes.

Brewster Central School District’s $119.5 million budget with a 2.9 percent tax levy increase passed 678 to 394. Elected to the Brewster School Board were incumbent Cynthia MacGregor Fox with 812 votes, Scott Seaman with 601 votes and Jennifer Carpiniello with 581 votes. Corey Hart received 580 votes.

In a letter to the community, outgoing Superintendent Dr. Laurie Bandlow thanked residents for their support.

“Our community continually demonstrates its unwavering commitment to educational excellence and dedication to our children” she wrote. “With the passage of this budget, the district can preserve and even enhance programmatic offerings and current staffing, and maintain small class size – all while operating under the state-mandated tax cap.”

Mahopac Central School District’s $142.4 million budget with a 1.98 percent tax levy increase was approved by voters 1,161 to 921. The bus purchase proposition was also approved, 1,232 to 844; as was the establishment of a capital reserve fund, 1,233 to 846.

Elected to the Mahopac School Board were Jennifer Travis with 1,050 votes, Lisa Carway with 1,038 votes and Christopher Harrigan with 976 votes. Incumbent Lucy Massafra received 946 votes, Sharae Nix received 932 votes and Noelle Harrison received 816 votes.

Putnam Valley Central School District’s $60.5 million budget with a 2.56 percent tax levy increase passed 752 to 608. The bus purchase proposition also passed, 764 to 593; and a proposition to establish a capital reserve fund passed 766 to 589.

Elected to the Putnam Valley School Board were incumbent Barbara Parmly with 849 votes and Alexandra Hayes with 721 votes. Maranda Zocchi received 485 votes and Zayd Eljamal received 343 votes.

Haldane Central School District’s $29.2 million budget with a 2.8 percent tax levy increase passed 336 to 112. Elected to the Haldane School Board were Michelle Kupper and incumbent Maggie Valentine.

Garrison Union Free School District’s $13.3 million budget with 4.44 percent tax levy increase was approved 190 to 55. A proposition to allow Garrison to enter into a multi-year high school tuition contract with Haldane CSD was also approved, 235 to 9; with a similar proposition with the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery CSD approved 223 to 23. In addition, a proposition that allows the district to register voters continuously throughout the school year passed 215 to 26.

Elected to the Garrison School Board were Eric Arnold, Peter Lesser and incumbent Jennifer Harriton-Wilson.

“Thank you for participating in this year’s budget vote and board election,” wrote Superintendent Carl Albano. “Your continued support has enabled us to provide outstanding educational experiences for our students.”
