In a report released earlier this month, US News & World Reports has named Putnam County the eighth safest county in America.
In the report, communities across the country are ranked by a series of metrics across “three key areas” – crime, injuries, and public safety capacity. According to pending 2024 data, Putnam’s crime rate shows a decline of 15 percent in 2023.
This report comes on the heels of Putnam consistently being ranked one of the healthiest counties in New York State and the country.
“Putnam County is a place where anybody, regardless of their background, has an opportunity to be healthy and successful,” said County Executive Kevin Byrne. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work of all who have made public safety a priority and a reflection of the remarkable people who call Putnam County home.”
He noted that the county has “incredible individuals” working in emergency services, law enforcement, rehabilitation, prevention, education and treatment, “and we have successfully worked to foster a safe environment for all to thrive.”
Sheriff Kevin McConville said that while he is pleased with the ranking, his goal is for the county to be number one.
“This achievement is the result of the hard work of our deputies, investigators and corrections officers,” he said. “Every member of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is well trained and aware of their role in keeping our residents and communities safe. I congratulate them for their efforts and this recognition.”
Eight counties across New York State were recognized in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Top 25 Safest Communities in America” – more than any other state in the nation – for a their decline in crime. They include Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Putnam, Westchester, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
Statewide, crime is down 6 percent year over year, according to data from both the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and NYPD CompStat.
