Operation Cupid, an annual initiative by United for the Troops of Mahopac to send care packages and handwritten cards to active-duty service members for the Valentine’s Day holiday, received a boost from students, teachers and staff at Brookside Elementary School in Baldwin – as well as other area schools – recently.
“It’s so important to have our youth involved in our community and to understand the importance and sacrifice of our troops,” said Jim Rathschmidt, co-founder of United for the Troops. “By writing cards and sending care packages, we help show our appreciation and support for our military and what they do for us so far away from home.”
UFT recently gathered to send out 352 gift boxes – for a total of 34,737 in 18 years. The first box of the day to be packaged was in honor of Rathschmidt’s son, Luke, who died last year.
“It’s inspiring to see our students come together to support our service members,” said Assemblyman Matt Slater, R-Yorktown, who participated in donation pickups at the school. “This tradition brings comfort to those serving far from home and instills in our youth the values of gratitude and giving back. It’s an honor to be part of this effort, and I look forward to continuing it for years to come.”
